Our Philosophy
At Sailors Grave, artwork isn't an afterthought. It's part of how we tell stories about place, people and the beers we make.
Every label, poster and print begins with the artist's hand, not a computer. We work with original illustration, printmaking and drawing because we believe the marks of the maker matter.
From hand-carved linocut prints to detailed illustrations, our artwork reflects the same values that guide our brewing: patience, craftsmanship and a willingness to take the long way around.
Our Artists
Joe Lyward
Based in the UK, Joe creates the artwork that appears across Sailors Grave beer labels, merchandise and brand materials. His illustrations bring to life the characters, stories and sense of adventure that run throughout Sailors Grave.
Gab and Chris found Joe after months of searching far and wide for an artist whose work could capture the spirit of Sailors Grave. He has been part of the journey since the very beginning.
Gab Moore
A self-taught linocut artist and co-owner of Sailors Grave Brewing.
Inspired by the wild landscapes, coastal stories and handmade traditions of Gippsland, Gab creates original hand-carved prints that celebrate place, nature and craftsmanship.
About Linocut Printing
Linocut, also known as lino print, lino printing or linoleum art, is a printmaking technique in which a sheet of linoleum is used for a relief surface.
Each print is individually printed by hand, embracing the subtle variations and textures that make traditional printmaking so unique.
Reduction Print
A reduction print is a traditional printmaking technique where a single lino block is carved and printed in multiple stages to build up layers of colour.
The artist begins by printing the lightest colour across the entire edition. The block is then carved further, removing areas that will remain that colour, before printing the next layer. This process continues, with more of the block being carved away before each new colour is added.
Because the block is progressively reduced throughout the process, no additional prints can be made once the edition is complete. This makes every reduction print part of a genuinely limited edition, reflecting the time, planning and craftsmanship involved in its creation.
Each print is hand-printed and may contain slight variation that are part of the character and authenticity of original linocut artwork.
